Should I Start Thinking About Estate Planning?

At What Age Should I Start Thinking About Estate Planning?

Estate Planning Advice from Tyrell Law, PLLC

Perhaps you find yourself wondering if it is too soon—or too late—to begin your estate planning.  The truth is, as soon as you know what your end-of-life wishes are, or have assets you would like disbursed in a certain way after your passing, that is the time to begin planning your estate.  Any person over eighteen years old who has not been declared legally incapacitated can benefit from Las Vegas, Henderson, or Boulder City estate planning advice.

Life is unexpected by its very nature.  You never know if a solid estate plan will be needed today, tomorrow, or years from now.  But by making just a few simple preparations, you may save your loved ones a great deal of heartache.  Once you make your wishes and directives known, it is much easier for them to be followed should you become unable to express them later in life.  A few items every estate plan should include are:

  • A will.  These documents can prevent family arguments by making your wishes as explicit as possible.  They can also be used to protect and sustain any business assets you may have.
  • An Advanced Directive (also known as a Living Will).  An Advance Directive lets your loved ones know what you would like done medically in the event you are unable to make a decision when one is required.  It takes the burden of making that decision off them, and offers the peace of mind that comes from knowing your end-of-life care proceeds exactly as you wished.
  • A Power of Attorney document.  This is a document where you assign a person to make medical, financial, or both types of decisions if you become incapacitated.  It should be someone you trust to carry out your requests exactly as you set them down.

If you would like your estate handled according to your directives and wishes when you are no longer here, or want a smoother transition for your loved ones after you are gone, it is never too early to begin seeking estate planning advice from Tyrell Law, PLLC.
